Once the surface lignin breaks down, rain washes away dead cellular matter, creating a porous, brittle surface that absorbs dirt, fungal spores, and moisture.

The Professional 4-Step Deck Restoration Process

1. Tannin Extraction and Chemical Stripping

Applying new oil over greyed, dirty timber simply seals in grime and produces a muddy, blotchy appearance. We apply specialized chemical timber strippers and oxalic acid cleaners to lift degraded coatings, extract stubborn tannins, and restore the natural warm timber coloration.

2. High-Pressure Neutralization and Rinse

After chemical agitation with stiff nylon bristle brooms, the surface is thoroughly rinsed with high-pressure clean water. This step neutralizes chemical residues and flushes dead wood fibres out of grain recesses.

3. Mechanical Orbital Sanding

Once fully dry, the entire deck surface is mechanically sanded using commercial orbital sanders with 80-grit to 120-grit abrasive paper. Sanding serves three critical functions:

  • Removes splintered wood fibers, making the deck comfortable for bare feet.
  • Opens the timber pore structure, maximizing oil penetration.
  • Evens out board joints and eliminates water tide marks.

4. Dual Saturation Coating with Premium Decking Oils

We apply two generous saturation coats of high-grade decking oil (such as Cutek Extreme or Intergrain UltraDeck). The first coat is applied using long-nap lambswool applicators, allowing oil to soak deep into the cell structure. After 24 hours of curing, a second barrier coat locks out moisture.
